Visitor Information

Visas
As a general rule, Brazil requests visas based on the principle of reciprocity of treatment given to Brazilian citizens. Please check with the Brazilian Consulate in your region. All visitors need a valid passport. 

Language
São Paulo’s official language is Brazilian Portuguese, with many tourist-related service industry personnel communicating in English or Spanish.

Religion
Predominantly Catholic, although many other religions are present throughout the country.

Identification
Visitors are advised to carry some photo identification, such as passport or driving license.  Police advise that those hiring cars should always carry their valid driver’s license and passport.

Water
Even though water in São Paulo is treated, it is not advisable to drink from the tap when out in the city. Two alternatives are bottled water (mineral water) and filtered water. 
     
Taxes
ISS (Imposto sobre Serviços/ Service Tax) – 5% of the total room charges
Tourism Tax – R$ 7 per room per night

Tipping
Most restaurants add a 10% service charge.  Where tipping is voluntary, 10% is fine.

Weights and Measures
Brazil has officially adopted the metric system as standard.

Currency
The monetary unit in Brazil is the Real (R$).

Banks
Most banks have ATMs spread across the city, but only certain locations accept international ATM cards.  

Electricity
São Paulo operates with both 110 volt and 220 volt AC, 60Hz electricity.  The hotel uses 220 volt, but has a large supply of adaptors and transformers for 110-volt electrical appliances.
 
Climate
São Paulo’s elevation (approx. 2,500 ft), gives it moderate temperatures. Being in the southern hemisphere, the seasons are opposite to the US and Europe. Summer in Sao Paulo officially begins around November and ends in March with temperatures reaching up to 104F/40C.
